Structural Integrity of The York Hinge.
Forward:
There is no Street Lighting Standard directly relating to the structural strength of a device such as the York Hinge in isolation, although once fitted to a column, the columns integrity may then be assessed.
The Company has gone to great lengths to ensure that this product will not compromise a B column’s integrity even under the worst site conditions.
To this end, the York Hinge has been subjected to numerous physical tests conducted in accordance with BS 5649 and EN 40 part 6& 7 under accredited supervision.
The load criteria for these tests were provided by a leading column manufacturer and the tests were supervised by Dr John Forth of The Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Leeds.
Target load: Hinge not to fail when 3.75kNm is applied.
Method: Side deflection load tests. By rotating the Hinge, the load were applied from 4 separate directions in accordance with BS 5649 & EN40 part 6 &7.
Applied load: <5.625 kNm without deformation.
Ultimate load: A load of 7.5 kNm was applied to the Hinge without inducing failure. (The consultants considered any further increase of the load both unnecessary and hazardous to the test technicians).
The Hinge did not fail, the shaft section fixed to the anchor point deformed. |
